Currencies

  • EUR/USD The euro weakened for a third day as Greece struggles to conclude debt-swap talks with creditors by the end of this week.
    • The 17-nation currency slid 0.3 percent to $1.3050 as of 6:34 a.m. in London.
  • AUD/USD The Australian dollar declined on speculation U.S. jobs data will point to a slowing recovery in the world's largest economy, reducing demand for higher-yielding assets.
    • Australia's dollar slid 0.4 percent to $1.0576 as of 6:14 p.m. in Sydney.

Commodities

  • Oil traded near the lowest price in more than a week on signs that consumer confidence and demand for fuel are slipping in the U.S., the biggest crude consumer.
    • Crude for March delivery was at $98.67 a barrel, up 14 cents in electronic trading on the New York Mercantile Exchange at 2:27 p.m. Singapore time.
  • Gold prices were on course for their biggest monthly rise since August on Tuesday, boosted by economic unease in Europe and the United States and raising the possibility of a climb toward last year's record high of just over $1,900 per ounce.
    • Gold was up 0.8 percent at $1,742.59 an ounce by 1523 GMT, having earlier touched $1,747.39 - its highest since mid-December.

Equities

  • Asian stocks fell, erasing gains, amid speculation that an unexpected expansion in China's manufacturing reduces the need for easier monetary policy.
    • The MSCI Asia Pacific Index (MXAP) slipped 0.3 percent.
  • US stocks fell for a fourth day, the longest streak for the Dow Jones Industrial Average since August, as reports showed consumer confidence trailed economists' projections and business activity cooled.
    • The Standard & Poor's 500 Index declined 0.1 percent.
    • The Dow retreated 20.81 points, or 0.2 percent.
  • European stocks (SXXP) stock futures advanced, indicating the Stoxx Europe 600 Index may extend its best start to a year since 1998.
    • U.K.'s FTSE 100 Index expiring in March gained 0.1.
